Your move-in experience
Moving into a care home is a big transition — for the person moving and for the whole family. A little preparation makes the first weeks far easier. Here’s what to expect and how to smooth the way.
Before the move
Once you’ve chosen a home, expect a pre-admission assessment: the home will review care needs, medical history and medication so the right support is ready on day one. Use this conversation to agree the practical details too — what furniture can come, how laundry is labelled, and who your main contact will be.
Make the room theirs from day one
Familiar things do more than decoration — photographs, a favourite chair or blanket, pictures for the walls, ornaments, even a familiar scent. Bring a first wave of cherished items on moving day and add more over the following weeks. Most homes will happily help hang pictures and arrange furniture.
The first days
Expect a warm welcome, a tour, and introductions to staff and neighbours — and expect some wobbles too, which are completely normal. Agree with the home how they’ll keep you updated in the early days, and don’t be afraid to visit often (or, on advice, to give a little space) while routines settle.
The care plan is yours
Within the first weeks the home should turn its assessment into a personal care plan — routines, preferences, health needs, and what a good day looks like. Family can ask to see it, and it should be reviewed regularly and whenever needs change. If something isn’t working, say so early; good homes adjust.
